This training information evening will be held in Sydney with Manuela Mischke-Reeds and Karen Baikie. Manuela will give a talk on “Body Wisdom in a Digital Age” and Karen will talk about the structure and curriculum for the next Sydney Hakomi Training, commencing in June 2019. There will be the opportunity to ask questions about the training, a chance to meet the Training Staff, while enjoying mingling, nibbles and drinks.

Body Wisdom in a Digital Age

The average person spends 24 hours online in any given week and an average 10 hours of screen time a day. Since 2000 that number has risen from 9 hours to 24 hours. The average person spends 90 minutes on their phone, which over 23 years adds up to 3.9 years of their life. Most people check their phones between 50-74 times per day, training their attention towards a model of disruption and inattention rather than concentration and productivity.

What are the consequences of spending our mind and body attention exposed to data and sensory input? Our brains are wired for connection and our wellbeing is enhanced when we have quality time with others. We are also wired to orient for danger and filter sensory input though our bodies and brains. Without adequate rest and restoring time we can’t absorb the stimuli that are coming towards us. Cumulative stress and trauma symptoms are on the rise.

This talk explores the psychobiological implications of our bodies and psyche when we are not mindful of our digital use and the effects of digital media and information flow on our access to inherit wisdom. We will look at how the body gets dysregulated from its own source of knowing and how to restore your own body wisdom. Body wisdom is a technology that is hardwired in your body and brain, and can easily be accessed through the cultivation of somatic practice and mindfulness-based interventions.
